![]() They often have free or cheap interaction that secure their wins. Most commonly-included cards are mana rocks that are mana-positive, like Mana Crypt, Grim Monolith, and the legal Moxen like Mox Opal. cEDH decks accomplish this by playing the most efficient accelerates and win conditions in all of Magic. It’s no secret that decks in this sub-format are built to win fast, as fast as turn 1 or 2 sometimes. cEDH players are more concerned with having fun in a competitive multiplayer format than having everyone play with official copies of cards. The format is generally proxy-friendly, meaning players can use markers to replace overly-expensive cards like dual lands, Lion's Eye Diamond, and more. The format isn’t casual whatsoever but still seeks to be a fun and grittier alternative to conventional Commander gameplay.ĬEDH is filled with combos, hyper-efficient counterspells, and ultra-fast mana acceleration that all contribute to the competitive nature of the game. Thassa's Oracle | Illustration by Jesper EjsingĬompetitive Elder Dragon Highlander, or “cEDH,” is a sub-genre of Commander that focuses on tight, competitive decklists that intends to win fast and consistently. I’m going to go over just how these combos work, why they’re good, and rank the top seven from worst to best, although even the worst one is still extremely powerful. cEDH decks have a variety of win conditions available to them, most of which pertain to infinite combos. Today I’d like to showcase the format by going over one of the most commonly asked questions regarding cEDH: how to win. It leads to counterspell wars, forces players to think through the next few turns, and allows you to get that Vintage feel without, well, playing Vintage. cEDH is the competitive way to play Commander, where everyone’s decks are extremely efficient and powerful. It allows me to play with more of my friends at once, come up with unique styles of decks, and put all the cards I have in my collection to use without worrying about legality.īut there’s a sub-format of Commander that I thoroughly enjoy for its gritty and competitive nature, and that format is cEDH. Reminds me of Isochron Reversal except it doesn't need a way to spend all that mana.Underworld Breach | Illustration by Lie SetiawanĬommander is without a doubt my favorite and most played format within the game of Magic. If Breach resolves, you can start going off even with just Lotus Petal and Brain Freeze. However in spell heavy decks like Tymna/Kraum or Kess I've been very impressed by Brain Freeze, with two cards that are "I win" with a full graveyard (Breach and good old Yawgmoth's Win) it is not the worst just as a mill yourself for 12+ after opponent played a bunch of rocks and dorks, and after drawing a bunch of cards with Ad Nauseam, Notion Thief or just a Mystic Remora it can easily be just a two mana line winning you the game leaving a lot of room for your own counter spells. Obviously in something like Tymna/Kraum or Kess where you would probably play all of those cards individually the combo gets included anyway, but I wouldn't try to force it in every deck that's in red. I think the Wheel LED Breach combo is overrated, unless you're in white and manage to get Silence too to complete a 4 card combo it just leaves too much room for your opponents to find a Notion Thief, removal to Breach, their own Silence or sometimes even a counterspell is enough since you net only 1 extra card into your graveyard each loop -> if your graveyard isn't big, an early drawn Force of Will would stop your combo.
